The WCHC Playoffs were held this past weekend at KHS Ice Arena and pitted the 49ers against Loyola Marymount Lions for the 3rd time in as many weeks. The 49ers had struggled against the Lions all season going 1-3-0 against the cross-town rivals through the regular season. The puck dropped at 3:30p Friday afternoon and the 49ers were able to get the first goal of the game. Unfortunately, bad penalties and mistakes saw the 49ers down 4-2 going into the third period, an all to familiar place for the team against the Lions. Long Beach battled back to tie the game at 4 and things were looking up as the third period moved along. Loyola proved to be too much for the 49ers though as the Lions capitalized on several mistakes and walked away with the game 7-4.
The format of the WCHC Playoffs required a consolation game to be played the next night and brought the Fullerton Titans and Long Beach 49ers back together for a 3rd time in as many weeks as well. The 49ers record against the Titans this year was perfect as they were 4-0-0 through the regular season. The 49ers opened up the scoring first taking advantage of a Fullerton penalty in the first period. Fullerton and Long Beach went back and forth in scoring leaving the game looking like it was headed for overtime. With less than six minutes remaining in the game, Long Beach forward, Mike Hakimi found the back of the net to put the 49ers ahead 3-2. Fullerton made a strong push to the tie game again in the final minute of the period, but the 49ers stood strong and finished there 2012-2013 season with a win.
With the season now over, the 49ers look towards rebuilding and improving this off-season. The final rankings were released last night and saw the team receive the 13th spot in the West. While not enough for the regional playoffs, it is an improvement from last year and a step in the right direction for the team. On behalf of the program, the 49ers would like to thank the many individuals who helped make this season possible. Without the help of volunteers, students, parents, and the loyalty of our fans, the season would not have been what it was.
As soon as the 2013-2014 schedule is finalized it will be posted on the website. Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and Facebook!
