Long Beach closed out there regular season this weekend with games against the Loyola Marymount Lions and Cal. State Fullerton Titans.
Friday night brought the Lions to Lakewood for the fourth game in the season series between the two teams. Long Beach headed into the game down 1-2-0 in the season series losing 3-4, 1-8, and winning 4-3. The 49ers jumped out to an early lead and had momentum through the first 10 minutes of the first period. Unfortunately, two unanswered goals by the Lions saw the 49ers chasing just past the midway point of the game. Ian Hoang tied the game on a rebound but a bad turnover in the final seconds of the second allowed Loyola to capitalize and take a 3-2 lead into the third period. Loyola increased there lead several minutes into the third and buckled down on defense as to not allow a repeat of last week where Long Beach scored four goals in the final 12 minutes of the game. A goal by Matt Rushton with 40 seconds left in the game gave the 49ers a glimmer of hope, but there just wasn’t enough time to score the tying goal and the Lions came away with a 4-3 win.
Saturday night was Senior Night for the 49ers and a regular season sweep of the Titans was the goal for the evening. 49er senior, Chris Chan, led off the scoring with a power play goal just eight minutes into the game. The lead would be short lived however, as the Titans took advantage of several mistakes in the 49er defensive zone and scored, tying the game. In the second period, the intensity and hitting picked up, much to the cheer of the 500+ fans in attendance. The 49ers battled hard through the second and saw goals scored by Hakimi, Zdjelar, Chan, and Abramson, increasing the 49er lead to 5-1. The hitting and penalties continued through the third and the 49ers peppered the Fullerton goalie with shots but were unsuccessful in getting anything in the net. No goals were needed though as the 49er defense held the Titans to only four shots in the third, allowing Long Beach goalie Steven Strother to get his second win in his last three starts.
Congratulations and best of luck to all the graduating seniors; Chris Chan, Guillaume Chiavassa, Oscar Huezo, Paul Leigh, Brad Roberts, and Robbie Zdjelar. Also, congratulations to Guillaume Chiavassa for winning the Chris Northy Spirit Award.
While there are no more games at home for the 49ers, they still have two more games before the final ranking period ends. Next Friday (2/8) will bring Loyola and Long Beach back together for the West Coast Hockey Conference Playoff. The game starts at 3:30p and the winner will face the winner of Northern Arizona v Fullerton on Saturday(2/9) at 6:20p.
