The 49ers started off 2013 with a very important three-game weekend against the University of Utah Utes(#6), Utah State Aggies(#1), and Weber State Wildcats(#5).
Hopes were high within the program at the conclusion of the first semester as the injuries were going to be a thing of the past come January. Unfortunately things hadn’t worked out as planned and combined with two players getting into academic problems, the 49ers were forced to travel to Utah with a much shortened 15-man roster(12 players/3 goalies).
The weekend started off Thursday night at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex. The Utes jumped out to an early lead capitalizing on several mistakes while utilizing strong puck movement to wear down the 49ers team and come away with a 10-4 win. Friday night brought the team out to George S. Eccles Ice Center to face-off against a very strong western region powerhouse. The 49ers scored first on an early power-play but were left chasing by the end of the first as the Aggies scored twice in the final 30 seconds to extend their lead to 4-1. Both goalies held the teams scoreless through the second period while the Aggies speed and skill were too much for the 49ers in the third, walking away with an 8-1 win. Saturday night brought the team to the Weber County Ice Sheet where it was a new game but the same story. A worn down 49ers team made mistakes which the Wildcats took advantage of early and often. A surge in the second gave the 49ers a chance as the headed into the 2nd intermission, however, the Wildcats came out strong in the third and gave up nothing to the 49ers, finishing the game 10-3.
Next weekend the 49ers have a break in the schedule before they start their final stretch of the season with two home and home series with the LMU Lions and the CSUF Titans. Come out and support your 49ers as they fight for a strong end to the regular season.
